According to The Mirror, Aston Villa want to sign Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu on loan during the January transfer window.
What’s the story?
Ampadu made his first-team debut for Exeter City at the age of 15, and went on to appear 13 times for the club before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2017.
The 18-year-old featured in seven first-team games for Chelsea under Antonio Conte last season, but has made just two Europa League appearances for the Blues this term.
Indeed, Ampadu has not even made the squad for a Premier League game during the 2018-19 campaign, and it is thought that the Wales international could be allowed to leave on loan during the January transfer window.
According to The Mirror, Villa are keen to bring Ampadu to Villa Park, but Dean Smith’s side will face competition from Championship rivals Derby County.
What would Ampadu bring to Villa?
Capable of playing in midfield and at the back, Ampadu really is some talent, and regular Championship football would do him the world of good at this stage of his career.
He is already a six-time Wales international, and at 6ft, boasts the frame needed to be a competitor at Championship level despite his youth.
Ampadu only signed a new long-term contract with Chelsea in September, and he has been earmarked for a future first-team spot with the Blues.
The Welshman is already too good for Under-23 level though, and it would be a huge statement of intent if Villa managed to bring him to Villa Park.
Smith’s side are currently eighth in the Championship table, but the arrival of Ampadu in January would give them the boost they need to push for the top two.
