Messi was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, according to the White House. His name was not read out when the 2025 recipients of the medal – the nation's highest civilian honor – were announced at the ceremony in Washington.
According to the White House, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors."
The award was established by Robert F. Kennedy's brother, the late President John F. Kennedy, in 1963.
WHAT MESSI SAID
Messi's management released the following statement: "The White House informed FIFA, which informed the club at the end of December that Leo was to be awarded this recognition. Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he feels deeply honored and that it is a great privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he will not be able to attend. He thanked the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet with him in the near future."
